Zhi-HongXuisaplantphysiologistwhostudiedbotanyatPekingUniversity(1959–1965).HejoinedtheShanghaiInstituteofPlantPhysiology(SIPP),ChineseAcademyofSciences(CAS),asagraduatestudentin1965.Herecallswhathashappenedfortheinstitute,duringtheCulturalRevolution,andhewitnessedthespringofscienceeventuallycomingtoChina.XuwasavisitingscholarattheJohnInnesInstituteandintheDepartmentofBotanyatNottinghamUniversityintheUnitedKingdom(1979–1981).HebecamedeputydirectorofSIPPin1983anddirectorin1991;healsochairedtheStateKeyLaboratoryofPlantMolecularGeneticsSIPP(1988–1996).HeworkedasavisitingscientistintheInstituteofMolecularandCellBiology,NationalUniversityofSingapore,forthreemonthseachyear(1989–1992).HeservedasvicepresidentofCAS(1992–2002)andaspresidentofPekingUniversity(1999–2008).OvertheseperiodshewasheavilyinvolvedinthedesignandimplementationofmajorscientificprojectsinlifesciencesandagricultureinChina.HeisanacademicianofCASandmemberoftheAcademyofSciencesfortheDevelopingWorld.Hisscientificcontributionsmainlycoverplanttissueculture,hormonemechanismindevelopment,aswellasplantdevelopmentalresponsetoenvironment.Zhi-Hong,asascientistandleaderwhohasmadeanimpactinthecommunity,calledupalotofexcellentyoungscientistsreturningtoChina.AllofhiseffortshavepromotedthefastdevelopmentofChina'splantandagriculturalsciences. （本文来自www.jj00.com）
