In what is beingbilled as the largest "mountain-moving project" in Chinese history,one of China's biggest construction firms will spend ￡2.2bn toflatten 700 mountains levelling the area Lanzhou, allowing developers to builda new metropolis on the outskirts of the north-western city.

中国一家建筑公司将花费22亿英镑（约合219亿人民币）以进行这项中国历史上最大的“移山工程”，使兰州地区的更平整，这使得开发者们能够在这座西北城市外围建设新都市。

The Lanzhou NewArea, 500 square miles (130,000 hectares) of land 50 miles from the city, whichis the provincial capital of arid Gansu province, could increase the region'sgross domestic product to ￡27bn by 2030,according to the state-run China Daily.It has already attracted almost ￡7bn of corporate investment.

The project willbe China's fifth "state-level development zone" and the first in thecountry's rapidly developing interior, according to state media reports. Othersinclude Shanghai's Pudong and Tianjin's Binhai, home to a half-built,120-building replica of Manhattan. The first stageof the mountain-flattening initiative, which was reported on Tuesday by theChina Economic Weekly magazine, began in late October and will eventuallyenable a new urban district almost 10 squaremiles in size northeast of downtown Lanzhou – a small, butimportant part of the Lanzhou new area project to be built.
